Top Spots for Northern Michigan Stargazing

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
While not officially designated, this lakeshore is a night-sky gem. Park rangers host monthly star parties during the warmer months—great for meteor showers or casual constellation spotting. Best viewing spots include Glen Haven Beach, Good Harbor Beach, Platte River Point, and the Dune Climb parking lot—each offering the best views for Northern Michigan stargazing.
Leelanau Peninsula
One area you won’t want to miss is the Leelanau Peninsula, located only about 30 miles from our campground. With its quiet beaches, rolling hills, and wide views over Lake Michigan, the peninsula offers some of the clearest and darkest skies in the region. It’s the perfect quick trip for an evening under the stars without having to travel far.
Old Mission Peninsula – Mission Point Lighthouse
Just a short drive from Traverse City, the northern tip of Old Mission Peninsula is a peaceful place for stargazing. The shoreline near Mission Point Lighthouse feels far away from the busy city, making it a great spot to look for stars late at night or even catch the northern lights on clear evenings.
Joseph H. Rogers Observatory
When camping at our Northern Michigan campground, the Joseph H. Rogers Observatory is located just 30 minutes away on a hill that sits about 843 feet above sea level—giving it a clear, wide view of the night sky. It welcomes the public to monthly viewing nights hosted by student groups like the Skyward Scholars and the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society—great for spotting planets like Saturn, the Moon, or Jupiter through powerful telescopes.
